From 9 to 12th May 2018 the National Special Olympics Games were held in Tournai and Mouscron. The Belgian Special Olympics is a major annual event that brings together over 10.000 people. This year’s program involved 19 different sport disciplines and as ‘sponsor in kind’, AIG was present to hand out medals to the winners.
In the context of Diversity & Inclusion the AIG Marine Department has been ‘sponsor in kind’ (insurer free of premium) for the logistics of all specialized equipment. And this since 2013. The aim of the Special Olympics is to offer people with intellectual and cognitive disabilities the opportunity to practice sports and follow adapted training programs and by doing so actively developing themselves on both a personal and a social level. Moreover, the taboo on intellectual and cognitive disability - which still occurs too often - is being broken.
Initiative taker at AIG, Yvan Van Keymeulen – Senior Underwriter Marine & Risk Strategist / Client Risk Solutions – was quoted saying:
Today Special Olympics Belgium reaches 15.600 athletes. The goal is to get 20.000 people with intellectual and cognitive disabilities to exercise and participate by 2020. AIG is proud to be part of the Special Olympics and to be able to contribute to making this an unforgettable warm and human sportive event.
